The herb spiral is the quintessential example of an element that embodies permaculture principles. Mimicking the spiral pattern that we see in nature, this space-saving garden bed creates different microclimates, allows you to grow several different herbs in a convenient 5 foot diameter area and is a beautiful addition to any garden.
However, when you look at a lot of the literature out there or the images of herb spirals, you often see mint included as a possible herb you might want to plant. Don’t fall for it, as I did! Adding mint to your herb spiral will turn it into a mint spiral. I now strongly recommend against this practice in my workshops. It’s best to grow mint in a pot or in an area of your yard where it’s okay for it to get out of control.
